How to scrap a car in Ontario

  1. Find your ownership. Licensed yards need the vehicle permit (ownership) in your name before they'll take a car. If it's lost, get a replacement at ServiceOntario first.
  2. Call two or three yards. Give the year, make and model, whether it's complete, and where it is. Ask whether they pay per tonne or a flat price, whether towing is free, and how they pay.
  3. Take off your licence plates. In Ontario the plates belong to you, not the car. Keep them or return them to ServiceOntario.
  4. Empty it. Personal items, garage door opener, toll transponder, documents in the glovebox.
  5. Hand over the car and keep the paperwork. Fill in the ownership the way the yard tells you, and keep a copy plus the receipt or bill of sale.
  6. Cancel your insurance once the car is gone.

What changes the price

  • Weight. Heavier vehicles pay more. A pickup is worth roughly twice a compact.
  • Complete or stripped. A car missing its engine, transmission, catalytic converter or rims is weighed lighter and often paid at a lower rate.
  • Towing. Many yards and car removal companies tow complete cars free within their area; others take the towing cost off the price.
  • The steel market. Car prices follow steel scrap, which we track every weekday. See today's steel prices.

Questions people ask

How much do scrap yards pay for cars in Ontario?

Today a complete car is worth about $290 per tonne at a typical Ontario yard (range $232–$348). A compact car weighs about 1.25 tonnes, so it's worth roughly $360; a full-size pickup about $640. Flat-price offers from car removal companies usually land in the same range, less towing.

Can I scrap a car without the ownership in Ontario?

Most licensed yards won't take a car without the vehicle permit (ownership) in the seller's name. If yours is lost, get a replacement at ServiceOntario before you call a yard.

Is towing free?

Many yards and car removal companies tow a complete car free within their service area; others deduct a towing charge from the price. Ask before you book, and ask whether the quote changes if the car is missing parts.

Should I sell the catalytic converter separately?

It can be worth more on its own (we track converters at about $175 each, with a wide range), but some yards pay less for a car that's missing it, and removing one takes tools. Get both prices before you cut it off.

What do I do with my licence plates?

Take them off before the car leaves. In Ontario, licence plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle. Keep them for your next car or return them to ServiceOntario.
