Get the most for your load
- Sort by metal before you go. Mixed loads get paid at the lowest grade in the pile.
- Strip steel off brass and aluminum. A steel screw in a brass tap can drop the whole piece a grade.
- Bring government photo ID. Every Ontario yard records it, and many photograph the load.
- Check whether the yard pays per pound or per tonne for steel. $0.10/lb and $200/tonne are the same money.
- Prices move with the London Metal Exchange. Copper can swing 10% in a month, so sell when the ticker is up.
