Brass is a copper-zinc alloy, so it tracks the copper price at a discount. Yellow brass is taps, valves, fittings and shell casings; red brass has more copper and pays more. Pull steel parts and rubber washers before you weigh in.
Where the number comes from
These are estimates, not quotes. We take the London Metal Exchange cash price for copper (2026-10-27: US$14,625 per tonne), convert it at the Bank of Canada rate (1.4038 CAD per USD), and apply the share of that price Ontario yards typically pay for each grade. The shares were set against what GTA, Hamilton and London yards were posting in October 2026 and are listed on the about page.
Your yard may pay more or less. Big, clean, sorted loads and regular sellers get the top of the range; small or dirty loads get the bottom. Call two yards before a big trip.
Questions people ask
How do I tell brass from bronze or copper?
Brass is yellow-gold; copper is reddish; bronze is a duller brown-gold and heavier. If a magnet sticks, it isn't any of them. Scratch it: brass stays yellow underneath.
Do shell casings count as brass?
Yes, spent brass casings are yellow brass at most yards, as long as they're fired and free of live rounds. Some yards want them in a separate container.
What about brass with chrome plating?
Chrome-plated taps and fixtures are often bought as a separate, lower grade. Ask before you mix them with clean yellow brass.
