Aluminum is light, so the dollars add up slowly, but clean extrusion and rims pay well per pound. The biggest mistake is mixing grades: a few steel screws or a plastic thermal break in a pile of window frames costs you the clean-extrusion price on the whole load.

Where the number comes from

These are estimates, not quotes. We take the London Metal Exchange cash price for aluminium (2026-10-27: US$3,078 per tonne), convert it at the Bank of Canada rate (1.4038 CAD per USD), and apply the share of that price Ontario yards typically pay for each grade. The shares were set against what GTA, Hamilton and London yards were posting in October 2026 and are listed on the about page.

Your yard may pay more or less. Big, clean, sorted loads and regular sellers get the top of the range; small or dirty loads get the bottom. Call two yards before a big trip.

Questions people ask

Why do cans pay so much less than extrusion?

Cans are thin, coated and often contaminated with liquid and steel, so the smelter recovers less metal per pound. Extrusion is thick, pure alloy that remelts cleanly.

Does painted aluminum pay less?

Painted siding and extrusion are normally fine at most yards. Aluminum with foam backing, glass, rubber or screws attached is downgraded to a mixed or dirty grade.

Are chrome rims worth the same?

No. Chrome-plated rims are usually paid at a lower rate because the plating has to be dealt with at the smelter. Polished bare rims pay the full rim price.
