Car batteries and lead prices by grade
| Grade | Typical price | Range | Since yesterday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car batteries Lead-acid only. Some yards pay per battery instead of per pound. | $0.34/lb | $0.29 – $0.39 | no change |
| Soft lead Flashing, pipe, sheet. Clean, no solder. | $0.82/lb | $0.72 – $0.92 | no change |
| Wheel weights Mixed lead, zinc and steel weights pay less than clean lead. | $0.17/lb | $0.14 – $0.20 | no change |
Lead-acid car, truck and marine batteries are bought by weight at most Ontario yards, and some pay a flat rate per battery instead. Soft lead (flashing, pipe, sheet) pays about twice the battery rate because it's pure metal.
Where the number comes from
These are estimates, not quotes. We take the London Metal Exchange cash price for lead (2026-10-27: US$1,900 per tonne), convert it at the Bank of Canada rate (1.4038 CAD per USD), and apply the share of that price Ontario yards typically pay for each grade. The shares were set against what GTA, Hamilton and London yards were posting in October 2026 and are listed on the about page.
Your yard may pay more or less. Big, clean, sorted loads and regular sellers get the top of the range; small or dirty loads get the bottom. Call two yards before a big trip.
Questions people ask
How much is a car battery worth for scrap?
A standard car battery weighs about 40 lb, so at today's rate it's worth roughly ten dollars. Truck and marine batteries weigh more and pay more. Yards that pay per unit usually land in the same range.
Can I sell lithium batteries?
Most scrap yards don't buy lithium-ion batteries from the public and some won't accept them at all. Take them to a retailer or municipal hazardous-waste depot.
Do I need to drain the acid?
No. Leave batteries intact and upright. Cracked or leaking batteries may be refused.
